The objective of Dribbling to Own the Circle is to become a better basketball dribbler. This drill will work on all the major basketball dribbling moves as well as the art of protecting the ball from an opponent.

The objective of Dribbling to Own the Circle is to become a better basketball dribbler. This drill will work on all the major basketball dribbling moves as well as the art of protecting the ball from an opponent.

Dribbling to Own the Circle

Setup

  1. Use the center circle on the basketball court.
  2. Adjust the size based upon the number of players you have in the drill. Use cones to expand this the circle to make it larger. 
  3. Every player needs a ball and will start inside the circle.

Instructions

  1. Put every player within the circle with a ball. 
  2. Have everyone begin dribbling on the move within the circle.  Nobody standing still. 
  3. This will force the players to have their heads up to see the traffic while they are controlling the ball. 
  4. As time progresses ask the players to work on different skills and moves within the circle. 
  5. You can have them stop and all do the spider dribble, figure 8 or another ballhandling drill. 
  6. Make them change directions, go through the legs or behind the back. 
  7. Work on all moves and skills you can think of. 
  8. Then play Own the Circle. 
  9. The object is to protect your ball on the dribble, while knocking an opponents ball out of the circle. 
  10. Once your ball is out of the circle the you are out of the game and must leave the grid. 
  11. Last one standing with a ball wins.

  1. There are tons and tons of variations and skills.  Alot are listed in the instructions above, but feel free to try anything. 

Coaching Points

  • Focus on good ball handing skills. 
  • Stay low and take care of the ball. 
  • Keep your head up to see what is going on around the court.
