Five Point Passing Drill

Setup

  1. You will need to split the team into groups of 5 with 1 basketball for each group.
  2. Set up 5 players about 10 feet apart, with 4 players creating a square and the 5th player in the middle of the square.
  3. The middle player will start with the ball.

Instructions

  1.  The middle player should pass to one of the outside players, follow the pass and take the outside player's spot.
  2. The receiving player then makes a pass to one of the two players along the side of the grid.
  3. The passing player again takes the spot of the player he passes too.
  4. The receiving player then passes across the grid to the player in the opposite corner.
  5. The passing player again takes the spot of the player he passes too.
  6. This pattern should continue and players should continue to take the spot of the player in which he passes too.
  7. The pattern to follow is diagonal player, side player, diagonal play, etc..
  8. Continue the passing game for 10-15 minutes or until you feel the players have grasped the concepts of good passes.

Variations

Change up the different styles of passing:

  1. Chest passes - quick, accurate pass from the chest of the passer to the chest of the receiver
  2. Bounce pass - the ball is bounced off of the floor before reaching the receiver.
  3. Overhead pass - a pass thrown with both hands from behind the head (like a soccer throw-in)
  4. Baseball pass - this pass is for longer distances, so you should back the players up a bit

Coaching Points

Focus on:

  1. Good passing accuracy
  2. Good speed on the ball
  3. Good timing of passes
  4. Quick hands
  5. Thinking one step ahead of the play
