As a youth basketball coach you should always spend a little extra take time to properly plan and design a quality basketball practice for your players. Many coaches jsut show up and "wing it" resulting in an unchallenging practice environment for the basketball players as well as an environment in which the players will not advance. A little planning can make your life as a basketball coach much easier and your practices flow much smoother.
Have a goal or couple of goals for your practice. Choose to focus on areas that your team needs to improve upon and stay on topic. Do not do a dribbling drill followed by a shooting drill and then a defensive drill all in a row. Pick a topic and focus your session there. You can have a defensive focused practice with shooting and dribbling just focus on the defensive aspects.
Bottom line though is to make it fun for the kids. If they are not challenged and enjoying the practice then they will lose focus and not improve on the topic you have chosen. A well planned basketball practice can result in a fun yet focused session that will improve your squad.
