Playing good man to man defense is a lost art in the game of basketball. Today's game is all about offense, flash and scoring. But if you look closely, its the teams that can really play good defense that are the really successful ones.

Playing good man to man defense is a lost art in the game of basketball.  Today's game is all about offense, flash and scoring.  But if you look closely, its the teams that can really play good defense that are the really successful ones. 

The most important part of being a good man to man basketball defender is just flat out work and desire.  It all starts with effort.  Care about playing good defense.  Don't just go to the defensive end thinking about the next offensive possession.  Here are some other tips for playing good defense in the game of basketball.

Get pressure on the ball!  It is key number one.  Getting pressure on the ball limits the decision making process of the player with the ball and stops quick attacking.

Deny the middle of the court.  Force the ball wide either on the pass or dribble using the sideline as an extra defender and limiting the offensive options.

Have active hands.  Get them up in the passing lanes or in the player's face and line of sight.  This takes away options and will lead to poor passes and turnovers.

Be aware!  Know what is going on around you.  Do not just lock in on the ball.  Being aware will allow you to help when needed.  You'll see cutters and be able to anticipate where the ball is going better.

I'll throw out effort and desire again as you have to have both to be a good defender.  Basketball defense comes from wanting to play good defense!
